Therapy for Children Dealing with Divorce

Divorce can be devastating to children and teens. Ongoing high conflict situations between parents can create debilitating emotional distress to children and teens.

Ways divorce and high conflict co-parenting affect kids:

  • Children feel responsible for their parents’ breakup.

  • Children feel that have to choose between their parents.

  • Children experience sadness, depression, excessive worry, and anxiety.

  • Normal developmental processes can be delayed or affected.

At the Place for Counseling, we have a proven track record of success treating children and teens struggling with their parents’ high conflict divorce, separation, and the ongoing aftermath that can continues for years.

The Place for Counseling provides individual therapy to children and teens and has training in many different approaches to meet the needs of every child. Therapy services with children are designed to create a safe place for children to explore their hurt and pain while developing skills to empower them to work through this tough time.

Parents are an essential part of the therapy process for children.

Parents and therapists need to communicate regularly to ensure the conflict between parents is not directly impacting their children. Sometimes this is occurring, and parents are not aware to what degree the children are being affected. Andrea works with both parents separately as needed to assist with strategies to support and shield their children from this conflict in an effective manner.

Many times relationships between the child and one, or both parents, has been dramatically affected or impaired by the division in the family. At the Place for Counseling we specialize in helping to heal and repair child/parent relationships. Many times this occurs in family therapy. Other times a more specialized court ordered process call reunification therapy is needed.
